Genesis Expands SUV Lineup With All-New GV80 Coupe

The Genesis brand has experienced tremendous growth in the past few years, not only by using its quality-driven approach to become more competitive but also through its expanding lineup. Just before the 2023 Los Angeles Auto Show, Genesis built on this momentum with the debut of the brand-new 2025 GV80 Coupe and the refreshed 2025 GV80.

Following the reveal of the GV80 Coupe concept car at the 2023 New York Auto Show, the production version marks the company’s first coupe-like roofline SUV. In what has become a quickly ballooning sub-segment among luxury midsize SUVs, its size and luxury billing pits it against the likes of the BMW X6, Audi Q8, Mercedes-AMG GLE Coupe and Porsche Cayenne Coupe. Though we can’t yet comment on how it drives, we expect that a more affordable entry price than many of its competitors will make it an appealing new option.

As will its styling, which is essentially a chopped-roof version of the regular GV80. In addition to its microlens array (MLA) LED headlights, double-layered crest grille and fascia inlets that mimic a sports car, the GV80 Coupe has exclusive 20- and 22-inch wheels. It features an integrated rear-deck spoiler with an auxiliary brake light across the tail.

Inside, the GV80 Coupe has an updated version of the cabin from the previous GV80. New features include a flat-bottom steering wheel, a redesigned center console with a rotary infotainment system controller and rotary transmission shifter, as well as a new 27-inch OLED screen across the dash that functions as both a customizable digital instrument panel and an infotainment display. Genesis notes the coupe will have unique available stitching and carbon accents and added metal on the brake and gas pedals for grip.

Unlike some pseudo-sporty SUVs that are underpowered and bland to drive, the GV80 coupe will be available with two powertrains, including a stout top-end option that will match its snazzy personality. Genesis is pairing the sporty styling with a 409-horsepower turbocharged 3.5-liter gasoline engine with a 48-volt electric supercharger.

Official torque specifications will be released at a later time, but it’s likely this is the engine used in the top-of-the-line G90 sedan, which is rated at 409 horsepower and 405 pound-feet of torque. It pairs with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. Beyond the exterior, this is one of the main points of differentiation between the coupe and the standard GV80, which tops out with a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 that makes 375 horsepower. Genesis has not released details on the other GV80 Coupe engine, but we expect it to follow the standard GV80’s formula, which probably means a turbocharged four-cylinder.

Unveiled alongside the coupe was the traditionally designed 2025 GV80, which received its first refresh since debuting for the 2021 model year as the brand’s first SUV. At first glance, it looks similar, but there are some noticeable tweaks inside and out. The most prominent exterior changes are found on the front fascia. The grille shape has softer corners, and the grille has a new double-line design that’s meant to tie in with the two-line headlights, which also feature new MLA LEDs. The front bumper has larger air intakes and an updated skid plate design, while fresh 20- and 22-inch wheel designs are newly available. Out back, the exhaust tips are now hidden behind the bumper.

The 2025 GV80’s updated interior is similar to the one found in the coupe. One of the biggest changes is the infotainment screen, which is now a 27-inch OLED unit that replaces two separate displays and the gauge cluster dashboard hump to create cleaner visual lines. The cabin also has an updated steering wheel, redesigned HVAC touch-panel controls, a new-look crystal rotary gear selector, a new volume knob, a bigger center console cup holder and a wireless device charging pad tweaked for improved convenience.

Under the hood, the 2025 GV80’s powertrains carry over from the previous model. It will be available with a turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-four that makes 300 horsepower or a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 that makes 375 horsepower.

Expect full specs, details and pricing closer to the vehicle’s launch date in 2024.
