Assurances fuelling Evans’ Supercars ambitions

JAXON Evans has revealed the discussions that led to him leaving Europe for a full-time Supercars career involved assurances relating to his Camaro.

Jack Smith, the 2017 V8 Touring Car Series winner, failed to secure a top 20 championship ranking in his four seasons in the SCT Logistics entry run out of Brad Jones Racing.

Smith’s retirement has opened the door for Evans, the 2018 Carrera Cup Australia champion who spent a half-decade overseas as a Porsche driver and has impressed in enduro cameos for SCT.

In that time, Smith and Macauley Jones have operated out of the second BJR garage, and that’s presumably where Evans’ SCT entry will continue to be housed – but he’s confident it won’t be treated like a ‘fourth car’ per se.

“I know it’s a really tough championship and that’s also one of the most exciting things that has drawn me to join the championship,” Evans told V8 Sleuth.

“I think we have put everything in place to at least try to move up the grid a little bit and I’m confident that as an overall package we can start to be knocking on the door of some pretty decent results and that’s certainly the goal of mine.

“That’s reciprocated by the team, by SCT.

“We have been in some deep discussions about ensuring that we want to be achieving good results, we don’t just want to be there filling the numbers; it makes me excited.

“It’s for sure going to be a challenge but I’m pretty confident that come this time next year we would have had a few good results.”

Asked what gives him confidence in BJR/SCT, the 27-year-old elaborated: “We’ve come to a pretty happy conclusion for all parties involved.

“I’m confident that whichever way Brad (Jones) and the team go about their team structure will certainly not be a reflection of a tier system in the team within the cars.

“I’m confident and happy with what the team expects from me and also what the team thinks I’m expecting as I come in.

“I want to bring all of my experience from overseas and racing with different professional outfits in different championships to BJR and try to help them lift, and at the same time get something in return.”

BJR is coming off the equal-best teams’ championship result in its history, having placed third via its 2023 lead garage pairing of Andre Heimgartner and Bryce Fullwood.

Heimgartner, Fullwood, Jones and Evans make up BJR’s 2024 quartet.
