2024 Honda Cars: What’s New With Civic and Accord, Prelude Concept Debuts

Honda’s got Prelude on its mind. The automaker revealed a sharp-looking design exercise bearing the name of the discontinued model, and it’s whipping fans of the original into a frenzy. Considering its luxury brand Acura gained a new Integra for 2023, it’s almost like we’re back in the 1990s.

The Accord Hybrid scores updates, and deliveries of the Civic Hybrid begin soon. Keep reading to see what’s new for 2024 Honda cars as well as the Odyssey minivan.

Honda follows recent debuts of its new Accord and CR-V Hybrid with a new Civic Hybrid. The gas-electric compact will be offered as a sedan and hatchback, and we expect it to employ a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with two electric motors like the Euro-market Civic e:HEV. Fuel economy should be better than the Insight it replaces, which was rated at 51/45 mpg city/highway on 2022 top-trim models and 55/49 mpg for lower trims with smaller wheels.

The Civic lineup was redesigned not long ago, for 2022, when it scored new design language, improved underpinnings, updated technology, and more powerful and efficient powertrains. The new Civic Hybrid will go on sale in the 2024 calendar year, though it’s expected to be a 2025 model-year vehicle.

The 2024 Accord Hybrid receives some updates, but the gas model carries over unchanged. The midsize sedan range was just redesigned for 2023, though. Updates for that model year included a stiffer chassis and retuned suspension, improved powertrains, new cabin screens, and over-the-air update capability.

Previously optional blind-spot and rear cross-traffic monitoring on the Accord Hybrid EX trim level and up are now standard on those 2024 models. That represents the totality of changes for Honda’s gas-electric midsize four-door. As with the gas variant, the hybrid was redesigned for 2023.

Although Honda’s minivan rolls over into 2024 unchanged, it has received some small updates since its 2021 refresh. These include a standard 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen and the addition to the lineup of the first Odyssey Sport model. A new two-year/24,000-mile basic maintenance plan came with every Odyssey for 2023, too.

Considering a redesigned Type R arrived for 2023, the 2024 CTR shouldn’t see any significant changes. The previous generation was around for five model years without receiving many updates, and the same will likely happen here. That last version did receive a cool Limited model available in iconic Phoenix Yellow exterior paint to close out its run. We wouldn’t hate it if something similar happened with this Type R.

From a trademark filing in August 2023 to a concept car unveiled at the Japan Mobility Show (nee the Tokyo Motor Show), Honda appears ready to give the Prelude another shot, or it’s at least testing the waters. The original was a sport compact coupe built from the late 1980s to the early 2000s, and the prototype is also relatively small (think Subaru BRZ sized) and has two doors. We have our doubts a production Prelude will come with just two doors, however, given the demise of the Civic coupe and the Acura Integra returning only as a four-door (prove us wrong, Honda).

The Prelude concept is front-engine, front-wheel drive like the OG versions, but it looks like pure internal combustion power is out. Honda instead suggests the car will get an electrified powertrain, leading us to think a hybrid system could be in its future. Few details have emerged so far, but we imagine performance will be closer to the Civic Si’s and less like the Civic Type R. Either way, we hope this Honda car becomes a reality and we hope even more that it comes to the U.S.
