Fewer emergency calls than usual in Gauteng on New Year’s Eve, but festive carnage

The Gauteng Emergency Medical Services (EMS) saw a decline in cases on New Year’s Eve, but not over the festive season in general.
Although the decline was marginal, it appears that the large police and EMS presence made a dent in the carnage on New Year’s Eve.
Speaking from the EMS Communication Centre in Midrand on Sunday, Gauteng EMS Deputy Director of Communications and Special Operations, JP Von Benecke, said calls for trauma and suicides traditionally increased on New Year’s Eve.
