Actress Carrie Bernans Among People Injured in Midtown New Year’s Crash

At least nine people were injured early Monday morning in Midtown Manhattan when the driver of a black sedan crashed into a sidewalk, striking police cars and a food truck, according to the New York Police Department.

Among the injured was Carrie Bernans, an actress and stuntwoman who said in social media posts that she had been pinned unconscious under the food truck. She was hospitalized with broken bones, fractures and chipped teeth, she said.

At least five other pedestrians, including Julie Hansson, a marketing agent who was with Ms. Bernans, were also struck and were taken to a hospital in stable condition.

Ms. Bernans, who has worked on the Marvel films “Avengers: Endgame” and “Black Panther,” as well as the 2023 film “The Color Purple,” shared an update after the crash, including graphic images of her injuries.

“I’m still in so much pain,” she said Tuesday in a video in which her face appeared swollen and her teeth chipped. But she said she was persevering. “I’m strong,” she said. “I’m going to be OK.”

Three police officers were injured in the crash. Two refused medical attention and one was treated for minor injuries, the police said.

The driver of the car, a 44-year-old man the police identified as Mohamed Alaouie of New Jersey, was hospitalized in critical but stable condition after what the police called “reckless driving.” His charges included attempted murder, assault, reckless endangerment, driving while intoxicated and criminally possessing a controlled substance.

Police officers approached the sedan near 33rd Street and Sixth Avenue around 1:30 a.m., after reports of a “physical altercation” taking place in the car. After being ordered to park, Mr. Alaouie fled westbound, mounting the sidewalk and striking the food truck.

He drove off and mounted the curb again near Eighth Avenue, striking several vehicles and injuring two police officers on duty. Officers then took Mr. Alaouie into custody, and a 34-year-old female passenger was taken to a hospital.

The police presence in Manhattan had been heavier than usual for New Year’s Eve, with huge crowds attending the celebrations. But the area where the accident occurred was not close to the site of the annual ball drop and had not been cordoned off, the police said.

Ms. Hansson, the marketing agent, sustained a concussion and cuts to her head, according to her social media posts. Ms. Bernans shared an update on social media from the hospital on Tuesday.

“I may be in the worst pain I’ve experienced,” she wrote. “But it’s up from here.”
